One of the biggest struggles we face as composers and producers is our inner critic. That voice that often says stuff like, "that's not good enough" or "why are you even bothering?" It's this voice that unfortunately means you often overlook some of the most effective trailer music elements you could be taking advantage of...
Deep down you believe simple=rubbish
You think trailer music needs to be complicated
You lack the confidence to embrace texture and timbre
You struggle to create tension and build without drums/riffs/chords
ππΌ
You lack the confidence to try new approaches to trailer music in fear they wont "succeed"
You listen to trailer music and think it must be hugely complex and complicated
You inner critic often stops you from pursuing simple ideas because it makes you think they "sound childish"
I started writing music for movie trailers in 2011. Then in 2017 I started teaching other people how to write music for trailers too.
Writing trailer music can be very daunting. On the one hand you have to write great ideas, often recorded yourself, then produce them to the highest possible standard. All from the comfort of your own studio. Or in my case, front room.
Learning to do this is tough, frustrating and sometimes gets you down. That's why I started creating courses. To help make writing music for trailers, ads, TV (and for fun) as simple and as straightforward as reading a book.

...and many, many more!
You sit down at your DAW with a clear picture in your head of the scene in the trailer you are going to write for. You lay down some textures and timbres, allowing this simple idea to grow into a simple yet powerful track that perfectly builds the tension in the trailer.
You no longer judge simple ideas, instead giving each idea it's own chance to flourish and develop into the music you hear in your head. That is the true gift this course can give you, embracing simple ideas knowing that they will convey complex emotions and stories with ease.
Don't get me wrong, theses aren't just any old drones. These drones are crafted to mimic the natural build and rising tension of a trailer cue. I have written many albums of these drones and even after years of the albums being released I am still landing placements that are using my drones.
Embrace simplicity in your trailer music.
Craft world-class drones that build in perfect sync with trailers.
Overcome your inner-critic and pursue even the smallest ideas.
Effortlessly create tension and drama with very little musical material
Utilise texture and timbre without relying on harmony and rhythm.
Nobody - Official Trailer
ππ»ββοΈ I walk you through my track that was used in this trailer in the course. This trailer used one of my tracks to create a dramatic build into a fight scene. The music works so well at representing the main character's growing anger without overpowering the visuals.
Judas and The Black Messiah - Official Trailer
ππ»ββοΈ My track was used in the middle of the trailer as a musical representation of the transition that the characters were going through between act 2 and act 3. This is a great example of how an incredibly simple tool like a drone when crafted to build and swell can be a great asset to the story of a movie trailer.
Your Honor - Teaser Trailer
ππ»ββοΈ This trailer used my track 'Sati' to great effect. As is so often the case with Bryan Cranston projects this trailer was about the main character building until he cracked. My music helped supply that feeling of inevitable tension and stress that pushed him over the edge!
In this module I introduce you to the course and explain what you will be learning. We then dive into some references of trailers that have used building drones really successfully. This all lays the foundation for creating your own drone tracks.
One of the fun part of drone music is to create your own. I show you various different ways to create your own awesome drones; recording them, using software to stretch the samples, generating them etc.
I think it is incredibly valuable to see how a track that has been used on a movie trailer was made. Doing this also validates the learning (this actually works). This walkthrough is my track Sati which has been used twice; once on a Your Honor teaser and once on the Nobody trailer.
After you have been shown the walkthrough I then create a track from scratch. Going through the same steps I have used to create 4 albums of building drone trailer music. This way you can see every single thought process and all the little "tips and tricks" I use on a day-to-day basis.
"Rich makes building drones much more fun"
Texture, timbre, dynamics! Rich points out three vital elements when building drones, which makes building drones much more fun and not just creating a long note! Rich also shares many different ways to build drones, which opens my mind and helps me see some new possibilities while creating drones!

The wonderful thing about this, and all of my courses is that I try to steer clear of getting too deep into theory. You will be at an advantage if you know how to harmonise the major/minor scales but aside from that you won't need any theory.
I am so blessed to have had the amazing mixing and mastering engineer Toby Mason produce an hour-long masterclass in Trailer Music mixing and mastering. He shows you how to mix and master your music to a Hollywood standard within the course.
Of course not! What I can say is that of all the composers and producers who have taken this course, the ones who are getting work as trailer music composers are the ones who put the hours into their work. They also happen to be super nice people (industry secret there)
