- One of my students Aidin about my teaching
In this course, I will show you every decision I make when writing and producing Action Sound design music . From choosing chord sounds and developing ideas, to shaping the structure and adding cinematic flourishes. This course if for anyone who wants to get into writing action sound desing music for trailers, TV or film.
The perfect course if you struggle with writing interesting action drums, or can't seem to create tension without using chords, or just can't structure your action sound design tracks to feel "right"

Easily create a complete track from scratch
Understand what makes a successful action sound design track
Create stand-out tracks that combine action percussion with cutting edge sounds
Write simple, punchy yet effective sound design arrangements for trailers
Maintain intensity in your tracks without relying on traditional harmony/melody
Captain America: Civil War - Multiple TV spots
My track 'Omega Red' was used in not one but two TV spots for Captain America: Civil War. The important part of this track was the signature braaam and the HUGE final build.
The Shallows - TV spot
My track 'Below Freezing' was used for this TV spot. This was one of my first placements using one of my action sound design cues and I was overjoyed!
The Girl in the Spider's Web - Official Trailer
One of my tracks was used to score the second and third act of this feature length trailer and was a huge milestone for me. The track was very percussion heavy and relied on constantly building tension.
I talk you through what is expected of you in this style and why it is one of the most fun, most freeing trailer music sub-genres there is.
References are the staple of all production music briefs as they most effectively communicate with you, the composer, what is expected of you. Most importantly, what is succeeding!
Pings are a trailer music staple and sometimes can feel like a cliche but they are still used all the time and can be one of the most effective tools to juxtapose against the massive trailer hits.
Although this isn't a course in writing action drums, they are a vital part of this genre. The ability to compose powerful drum patterns that not only drive the track but also punctuate it for the editors.
The ultimate tool for tension. In this style of trailer music you generally do not rely on traditional harmony and melody so risers are a very easy replacement as a way to create tension and build.
This both bring the power that editors and trailer houses so often expect from this style so getting these right is really important.
Cinematic transitions and details can be the difference between your track being noticed or it being just another "meh" sound design track. Don't overlook these small details.
I show you exactly what I did to the track to make it ready for release with a popular trailer music production company.
I started writing music for movie trailers in 2011. Then in 2017 I started teaching other people how to write music for trailers too.
Writing trailer music can be very daunting. On the one hand you have to write great ideas, often recorded yourself, then produce them to the highest possible standard. All from the comfort of your own studio. Or in my case, front room.
Learning to do this is tough, frustrating and sometimes gets you down. That's why I started creating courses. To help make writing music for trailers, ads, TV (and for fun) as simple and as straightforward as reading a book.

Yes, you do need to be able to use a DAW so you can follow along with the videos.
Nope, you can use whichever DAW you please as long as you know how to use it.
The wonderful thing about this, and all of my courses is that I try to steer clear of getting too deep into theory. You will be at an advantage if you know how to harmonise the major/minor scales but aside from that you won't need any theory.
I am so blessed to have had the amazing mixing and mastering engineer Toby Mason produce an hour-long masterclass in Trailer Music mixing and mastering. He shows you how to mix and master your music to a Hollywood standard within the course.
Of course not! What I can say is that of all the composers and producers who have taken this course, the ones who are getting work as trailer music composers are the ones who put the hours into their work. They also happen to be super nice people (industry secret there)
